ADO midfielder Sem Steijn does not regret the way he applauded (1-2) after his first goal against NAC in the play-offs. His father, Maurice Steijn, resigned from the Breda club last year because of threats against him and his family.
“A lot of emotions have been released from the past year,” said 20-year-old Steijn after the match in the Rat Verlegh Stadium. After the goal, he opened his arms to the fanatical Breda fans and pointed to his last name on the ADO shirt.
“Sweet revenge”, Steijn called the action. His father was threatened while he was a NAC coach and with disappointing results. Due to the threats, the coach’s home was shielded and his children temporarily did not sleep at home. Father Steijn now works at Sparta Rotterdam.
“I always try to separate my career from my father’s,” the midfielder continued. “But last year he took it home anyway. I did this for the whole Steijn family. It’s not normal for it to be like this at the time.”
“I also remain human, and then those kinds of emotions are released”, Steijn said during the match, raising his middle finger to the NAC audience. “When I entered the locker room, I said to myself: what have I done? It’s not practical, but I don’t regret it.”
Partly thanks to Steijn’s goal, ADO Den Haag laid the foundation for the semi-finals of the play-off promotion/relegation with a 1-2 victory. The return to The Hague will take place on Saturday at 4.30 pm.
