Schreuder signs two-year contract as new Ajax coach

Alfred Schreuder will certainly be Erik ten Hag’s successor as Ajax coach. De Barnevelder has signed a two-year contract with the Amsterdam club with an option for one more season.

“Being the head coach of Ajax is an honor and a great opportunity for me to grab with both hands,” says 49-year-old Schreuder on the Ajax website. “I also like to come back, because I had a great time at the club in the year and a half that I worked at Ajax.”

“I want to win prizes with a team that plays attractive football in Amsterdam. There is a good balance between the most experienced players and a lot of great talent. But first I want to finish the season successfully at Club Brugge. This is important and so will I. everything in my power to make it happen.”

Ajax had to look for a successor for Ten Hag, who will leave for Manchester United this summer. Under Ten Hag, the Amsterdam team won three national championships and the KNVB Cup twice.

Schreuder was appointed coach of Club Brugge earlier this year. The Belgian frontrunner would have a limited transfer fee on his contract of 1.5 million euros.

Schreuder was already an assistant to Ten Hag at Ajax

For Schreuder, his appointment at Ajax means a return to the club where he assisted Ten Hag in the successful 2018/2019 season. Due to a dramatic finish against Tottenham Hotspur, the team narrowly missed the Champions League final.

The former player of RKC, NAC and Feyenoord started his first managerial position at FC Twente in 2014. After his departure from Ajax, he worked at TSG Hoffenheim and assisted Ronald Koeman at FC Barcelona.

The former midfielder has been at the head of Club Brugge since the beginning of this year and is engaged in an exciting title battle with the Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. Schreuder’s team is three points ahead with two games to go.
