Fabio Jakobsen won the second stage of the Tour of Hungary on Thursday. A Dutch group was strongest in the sprint. The scene was disrupted in the last kilometer by a serious accident with Olav Kooij.
After 192 kilometers from Karcag to Hajdúszoboszló, 25-year-old Jakobsen defeated Frenchman Rudy Barbier (second) and Belgian Sasha Weemaes (third).
Big drop in the peloton at 700 meters from the finish. Several Jumbo-Visma pilots took part. Among them was Kooij, who won the opening stage in Hungary on Wednesday.
Kooij was unable to continue and was admitted to hospital for further examination. There, a deep cut was sewn into his calf. “It also looks good, it also shows it,” says sporting director Robert Wagner on the Jumbo-Visma website.
Other matters handled by Jumbo-Visma drivers
The accident meant an early end to the Tour of Hungary for Kooij. Other fallen Jumbo-Visma riders completed the finish. The Belgian Jens Reynders took over the leader’s jersey from Kooij.
Jakobsen was unaffected by the crash and took his seventh win of the season. Earlier this year he won Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, a stage in Paris-Nice and two stages in the Tour of Valencia and the Tour of Algarve.
The Tour of Hungary lasts until Sunday.
