Willem II will take the home game against FC Utrecht on Sunday for one last chance to participate in the Eredivisie. Tilburg is relegated if the club loses or draws. After one win, Kevin Hofland’s team is tied to Fortuna Sittard and Sparta Rotterdam. Numbers 16 and 15 in the standings keep a lead of 2 points on Willem II in the last round.
Fortuna will play an away game against NEC on Sunday. Sparta awaits an away match against Heracles Almelo. Eredivisie number 17 will play in the Kitchen Champion Division next season. Number 16 gets a second chance in the play-offs for promotion and relegation. You can be sure that the number 15 is kept at the highest level.
Hofland, Willem II’s coach, sees it as an advantage that his team only won against FC Utrecht. “It may sound crazy, but there is peace in the group because it is 100% clear what we have to do. Of course there is also a healthy tension, which is a good sign.”
Hofland realizes that a victory over FC Utrecht may not keep his team in the Eredivisie. “This is what it is,” she knows. “It is special that all three scenarios are still possible on the final day. I’ve never experienced this before. But we don’t have to think ‘if’. We have to win before we look at others.”
Willem II was promoted to the Eredivisie in 2014 and has been playing at the highest level ever since. The club was in fifth place two years ago when the season was cut short because of corona.
