Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was replaced on Saturday in the FA Cup final win against Chelsea due to knee problems. The Orange international was replaced by Joel Matip at the start of extra time, but the reason was unclear.
Van Dijk said afterwards: “During a sprint in the first half I felt something. I felt a knife in the back of my knee.” TVI† “I kept playing, but in the end I can’t take any risks for the team. I just have to trust Joel.”
Bee Ziggo Sports Minutes later, the defender revealed that his injury was not very serious. “I’m not worried, but I have no idea what’s going on.”
Liverpool won the FA Cup, beating Chelsea in the final on penalties at Wembley. No goals were scored in London in regular time and in overtime. The ‘Reds’ have won the FA Cup for the first time since 2006 and for the eighth time in club history.
“This win means a lot to me,” said Van Dijk. “This season demands a lot from us in all these games. But if we hadn’t made it to the final, we would have had a good week and we don’t want that.”
Thanks to their FA Cup win, Liverpool still have a shot at four trophies this season. Manager Jürgen Klopp’s side is still in the English title fight with Manchester City, playing the Champions League final against Real Madrid on Saturday, May 28.
