Iga Swiatek is one win away from Caroline Wozniacki’s record of 28 consecutive WTA 1000 matches between 2010 and 2011. The Poles defeated Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka (WTA-8) in Saturday’s clay-court semi-final. Roma in two sets: 6-2 and 6-1.
The 20-year-old Swiatek has won 27 consecutive WTA 1000 tournaments. If he wins the final on Sunday, he will face Wozniacki, who ended his career in 2020. Serena Williams is already the number one in the world. The American recorded 26 consecutive victories in 2013.
To match Wozniacki, Swiatek must defeat Ons Jabeur (WTA-7) or Daria Kasatkina (WTA-23) in the final battle in the Italian capital.
Swiatek then risks having to wait a long time before he single-handedly conquers the record. The next WTA 1000 tournament (the most famous after the Grand Slam) will not take place until August: the Canadian Open in Toronto.
Disappointment in Aryna Sabalenka.
Swiatek’s last defeat was against Ostapenko.
If Swiatek takes the overall victory in Rome, it will be his fifth consecutive tournament win. He won between two wins in Stuttgart, Miami, Indian Wells and Doha, and in the Billie Jean King Cup for the Polish team. Number one in the world rankings since April 4.
Swiatek’s last defeat dates back to February 16, when Jelena Ostapenko proved very strong in three sets in the second round of the WTA 500 tournament in Dubai.
With his performance, Swiatek is also the favorite of Roland Garros, who will start eight days later in Paris. He won the French Grand Slam tournament two years ago and reached the quarterfinals in 2021.
Congratulations to Iga Swiatek from Aryna Sabalenka.
