Girondins de Bordeaux were unofficially relegated on Saturday after 31 years of Ligue 1. Six-time French champions France could forget the worry at the highest level after a goalless draw with FC Lorient. Justin Kluivert scored for OGC Nice but saw his team lose.
Had Bordeaux had a chance to avoid relegation on the penultimate day of Ligue 1, the club’s fans would have turned against their own players. Halfway through the first half, the game had to be stopped because the fans threw rolls of toilet paper on the field. A banner reading “You are the greatest shame of our 140-year history” was unfurled.
Despite a small lead, Bordeaux did not score against FC Lorient. The team of Dutchman Javairô Dilrosun was disappointed in the final stage: substitute Gideon Mensah kicked his opponent out and received a red card.
If Bordeaux can in principle still defend itself, the chance is nil. Number eighteen (FC Metz) and number nineteen (Saint-Étienne), who play post-season at the end of the season, have three points and a much better goal difference (from -29 and -35 to -41).
Bordeaux last relegated from Ligue 1 in 1991. The club then finished tenth, but was relegated to second place due to financial difficulties. Thirteen years ago, ‘Les Girondins’ became the champion of France.
In recent years, Bordeaux has become increasingly competitive with the French. The wine region club, where the legendary Zinedine Zidane has been under contract for four years, has narrowly escaped relegation in recent seasons. This year, a relegation to the second level was inevitable, even after the resignation of coach Vladimir Petkovic. On the contrary, the introduction of Ajaccio, who returns to the top eight years later.
Justin Kluivert applauds after his goal for OGC Nice.
Kluivert scores, starting point for Wijnaldum
Kluivert wanted to score an important goal for OGC Nice in the European football battle, but the Orange eventually lost 1-3 to Lille OSC. As a result, the club dropped to sixth place and there were fears that European football would go wrong.
A day after being overtaken in the Dutch national team by national coach Louis van Gaal, Georginio Wijnaldum secured an important place with champions Paris Saint-Germain in an away game against Montpellier. With that, the Dutchman concluded with a 0-4 win. Lionel Messi (twice) and Kylian Mbappe, among others, were certain.
Olympique de Marseille lost an important second place in Ligue 1 that would have been good for the Champions League at the end of the season. Feyenoord’s former rival in the Conference League lost 2-0 at Stade Rennais and was overpowered by AS Monaco, who defeated Stade Brest 4-2.
