Excelsior can still hope for promotion to the Eredivisie. The Kralingers won the first leg 0-2 against Roda JC on Saturday in the first round of their promotional play-offs. In the next round, Excelsior will meet the number sixteen Eredivisie.
Excelsior and Roda JC drew 2-2 in Rotterdam on Tuesday. Both teams had a good chance of qualifying for the next round, as away goals were no longer doubled in the play-offs this season.
Thijs Dallinga, the top scorer in the Kitchen Champion classification after several defensive positions, had a great opportunity in the 67th minute to give Excelsior the lead. The striker was allowed to reach for a penalty and his effort was turned by Roda JC goalkeeper Rody de Boer.
Extra time was played in the Parkstad Limburg Stadium because there were no more goals in regular time. The Excelsior struck five minutes later. After Roda JC had missed a great opportunity with Guus Joppen (close range), Couhaib Driouech made the situation 0-1 on the other side. In the final phase, Nikolas Agrafiotis made the 0-2.
Excelsior will play their first game in the No. 16 Eredivisie on Wednesday. There are still a few clubs that could end up there: Heracles Almelo, Sparta Rotterdam, Fortuna Sittard and Willem II. In the other semi-finals, ADO Den Haag will meet FC Eindhoven.
Excelsior last played in the Eredivisie in 2019. After that, the Rotterdam club relegated via the play-offs. In total, Excelsior reached first place in the Netherlands eight times. Only FC Volendam (ten times) and De Graafschap (nine times) did it more often.
