SC Freiburg has to make do with their Europa League ticket. RB Leipzig drew 1-1 with Arminia Bielefeld on the last match day and qualified for the Champions League. For Bielefeld, this point meant that relegation was a fact.
Orange goalkeeper Mark Fleks from Freiburg could have qualified for the Champions League by beating Bayer Leverkusen, but that dream was shattered in a 2-1 defeat.
Freiburg opened aggressively and should have gone 1-0, but Lucas Höler hit the post hard. The home team became stronger after half an hour, but no goals were scored. Ten minutes later Flek had to see Leverkusen take the lead.
Janik Haberer scored just before the clock ticked, but Exequiel Palacios cleared the goal after Fleks advanced.
Bielefeld relegated
After two seasons in the Bundesliga, the curtain falls for Arminia Bielefeld. The team did not go further than 1-1 against RB Leipzig. After the break, Janni Serra gave Arminia a 1-0 lead, but Willi Orban equalized at half time.
Bielefeld needed a win and had to hope Stuttgart lost to Cologne to qualify for the relegation game. But Bielefeld, like Greuther Fürth, takes a step back, because Stuttgart won 2-1.
Stuttgart played it safe against Cologne (2-1) in injury time and Hertha Berlin, who lost 2-1 to Dortmund, therefore has to play a promotion/relegation match. Hertha’s opponent will be announced on Sunday. The opponents are Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV or Darmstadt.
