Djokovic wins his first title of the season in Rome

Serb Novak Djokovic was crowned champion of the Masters 1,000 in Rome for the sixth time in his career on Sunday by beating Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, 6-0 and 7-6 (5).

Djokovic conquered Rome again. It is already six times that the current number one in the world has won this tournament in the Italian capital. And he did so without giving up a single set.

It was victory number 1,001 in the career of the Serb, who, along with Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl and Rafael Nadal, has already come to the select club of players with the most victories by beating Norwegian Casper Ruud in the semi-finals.

It was the perfect week for ‘Nole’, who, in addition to his 1,000th victory and the crown in Rome, managed to hold onto the top position in the standings until Roland Garros.

Djokovic played his second final of the year, after losing to Russian Andrey Rublev in Serbia, and this time he didn’t fail. He clearly beat a Tsitsipas who didn’t show up in the first moto and didn’t know how to use his advantage in the second.

The Serb destroyed the Greek in the first set. Within half an hour he already scored a perfect 6-0, without mistakes, which made Tsitsipas desperate, who paid for it with his racket. The Greek’s failures, very erratic, and the solvency he showed until the final, were enough for Djokovic to break his rival’s three serves and keep his own serve.

At the second pole, the story was very different. Despite a few casual errors, Tsitsipas, encouraged by the crowd, eager for entertainment and reticent, found the match to be just a formality for the Serb, strength and good tennis to recover mentally from the hard blow he had been dealt.

He broke the Serb’s serve and confirmed the break with his 4-1 lead. It looked like he would soon break free from the previous set, but ‘Nole’ wouldn’t let it. The one from Belgrade recovered, gave the ‘break’ back to the Athenian and scored the equalizing goal, 5-5. A powerful cry of anger came from Djokovic, who with clenched fist released the tension and knew he was closer to victory.

The tie in the second set inevitably led to a tie-break. It was the Greek’s last chance to extend the game, but at 2-2 he crashed his backhand into the net and gave up his serve. He recovered to make it 5-5, but Djokovic didn’t fail in one of his favorite tournaments and gave him another ‘break’, final, to judge the game and the tournament.

Djokovic is crowned again in Rome in one of the most special weeks of his career.

It is the eleventh consecutive season that Novak has reached at least one Masters 1,000 final, and only Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, aged 14 and 15 respectively, have seen more such seasons in their careers.

The Serbian player, who is about to turn 35, is the one to have collected the most Masters 1,000 in history with a total of 37. In addition, he is the only one to have won all nine tournaments in that category.
