Coach Pioli uses interview with Milan fan Kobe Bryant in title fight

AC Milan are close to their first local title since 2011, beating Atalanta 2-0 on Sunday. Coach Stefano Pioli motivated and warned his players before the important game by showing an interview with basketball player Kobe Bryant, a big fan of Milan.

Milan has been at the top of Serie A since the beginning of March, but the gap with other city rivals Internazionale is small. Before Atalanta’s game, Milan was two points ahead and Pioli insisted on telling his players that the title had not yet been won.

“So I showed the kids an interview with Kobe Bryant,” Pioli said after the game. DAZN† “Kobe once led 2-0 in his best-seven series in the NBA playoffs, then said his team wasn’t ready yet.”

“Our mission is not over yet. We have to stay calm and focused, it could be decisive at the end of the season.”

Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash in 2020, lived in Italy for seven years as a youth, where he became a big fan of football and especially Milan. The best basketball player of the Los Angeles Lakers has won the NBA championship five times.

‘The players are still joking’

Milan has been Italian champion eighteen times, but the last time was eleven years ago. A draw will be enough for “Rossoneri” to visit number eleven Sassuolo this Sunday, as the head-to-head result in Serie A is above the average difference. Inter will face #16 Sampdoria at home.

According to Pioli, there is no competition stress in his selection. “Honestly, in recent weeks everything seems very normal,” said the Milan coach. “I see my players smiling, joking and concentrating every day when they come to the training complex. So I’m not worried.”

They still believe in their twentieth title at Inter, which won 1-3 against Cagliari on Sunday evening. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi: “This was not an easy match because we knew before kick-off that Milan had won. But my team played very well.” DAZNI

The defending champion’s coach thinks Sassuolo can provide a surprise in the final round. “They have a very good team with a lot of individual characteristics. I expect a very exciting and open battle for the title on Sunday.”
