Sparta sends play-offs to Heracles against relegation

The side of departing coach Frank Wormuth will meet Excelsior in the semi-finals. Heracles has been playing at the highest level since 2005 and has felt safe for a while. There is now a threat of relegation due to losses against Willem II, RKC Waalwijk (2-0 twice) and Sparta in the final week of the competition.

Sparta stayed in the relegation zone for a while, but managed to play it safe in the last weeks of the season. When Henk Fraser resigned at the end of last month, Sparta was the last with four games to play. Steijn, who will replace Fraser after this season, decided to step in immediately. He led Sparta from eighteenth to fourteenth place with 10 points and with that a longer stay in the Eredivisie.

After Younes Namlı’s penalty from the center circle, Arno Verschueren scored in the extra time of the first half. Heracles cried over a penalty at the hands of Aaron Meijers shortly after the break, but the VAR stopped referee Danny Makkelie. With about 20 minutes to go, Lennart Thy doubled Rotterdam’s lead with a pass from Meijers and signed for 0-3 instead of Mario Engels. His goal against Sinan Bakis could not help Herakles anymore.
