Suspension of the coach of the rowing club due to dangerous sports environment declared unfounded

The Dutch rowing federation had to lift the suspension of coach Hessel Evertse. The Amsterdam court declared the suspension unfounded last Friday. Evertse went back to work on Monday morning.

Rowing association KNRB is said to have a high-level sports culture with a lot of room for injuries and intimidation. This is apparent from a report by research agency Fijbes Consultancy. Then it was decided to suspend Evertse.

The Amsterdam District Court ruled that this decision was insufficiently motivated. The decision noted that the KNRB was hasty in suspending Evertse, and the findings of the report should first be discussed with the driver.

Following an evaluation within the Olympic rowing team after the Tokyo Games, the KNRB commissioned a study into high-level sports culture at the end of 2021. The union had received signals of hurtful and intimidating behavior from rowers.

“The report confirms the signals from the assessment,” said the KNRB when publishing the report. According to the association, the dangerous sports climate is not mentioned enough. The report found that this was not sexually abusive behaviour.

Under Evertse’s leadership, the Dutch rowers have achieved great sporting successes in recent years. In Tokyo, the Netherlands won five medals, including gold for double quads.
