Jurgen Klopp is raving about Liverpool’s tough and crucial 1-2 win against Southampton on Tuesday night. Thanks to the victory, the “Reds” can still hope for the championship on the last day of the Premier League.
Klopp was unable to keep Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Fabinho in Southampton’s selection due to injuries. Wear and tear in Saturday’s FA Cup final – Chelsea only lost on penalties – also kicked many other stars off the field.
Speaking of the call to many players in such an important game that normally falls off the bottom, Klopp said: “I was a bit overwhelmed, this win means a lot to me. “After the game I told some of them that what I did was almost a crime,” he said.
“It’s special to still be playing like this after nine team changes. If we had lined up those who played 120 minutes on Saturday, we would have had more problems.”
Joy to Liverpool after Joel Matip’s winning goal.
“It makes me a little emotional”
If Liverpool had been beaten, Manchester City would have been champions. Although Southampton took a 1-0 lead, it didn’t come to that. Liverpool won thanks to goals from Takumi Minamino and Joël Matip.
“If it had gone wrong, it would have been my responsibility,” Klopp said. “Luckily they did a great job. I’m very happy with this, it makes me a little emotional. I feel like I have a few Ferraris in the garage.”
Now it all comes down to the final round, where the leader City has the best cards. The team of manager Pep Guardiola has a one point lead and will play at home against Aston Villa on Sunday. Meanwhile, Liverpool face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
Thanks to the FA Cup victory, Liverpool have another chance to quadruple. Klopp’s side has already won the League Cup and has a shot at not only the league title, but also the Champions League. Real Madrid will play the final on May 28.
