2,000 mice found in Halderberge home: ‘It’s a mess’

The National Animal Welfare Inspectorate (LID) found at least a thousand mice on Friday in a building in Halderberge (North Brabant). Other animals were found in the neglected house.

Some mice were kept in cages and plastic boxes, but most of them roamed freely around the house. A resident of the house once brought home a few mice, but they breed very quickly.

When examining the cages, other animals were also found, such as pigeons, budgerigars, rabbits, roosters and a small number of mice. According to a spokesperson, the house was very dirty and had “a strong ammonia smell”.

The spokesman said: “We were infested with rats when we came in. Some mice were in cages with the parakeets,” he said. LID confiscated boxes and cages with more than 450 mice and other animals.

The escaped rats are still in the building. According to LID, it is up to the municipality to maintain the house. The local police officer was informed about the alarming situation at the address.
