It’s not even halfway through the season in the best baseball in the world, but Colombian players are showing off their weapons, bat or glove.
While there aren’t many of our representatives in the Major Leagues right now, those who are responsible for getting their name out there are flying all over the country.
At this point in the campaign, there are several who have fought and tried to be protagonists. Cartagena’s Giovanny Urshela has tried to stand out with the Minnesota Twins, the ninth he reached this year in a trade with the New York Yankees.
The Bolivarian third baseman, who was initially not anchored in his team’s line-up, gradually earned his place and is already one of the fundamental pieces, especially for what he has shown defensively.
This season, ‘Gio’ played 37 games and had 118 at bats in which he had 28 hits and three homeruns. His batting average is .237. and his ninth is currently the leader, at the end of this edition, of the Central Division of the American League with a record of 26 games won and 16 lost.
There is no doubt that Urshela has been one of the players who has helped improve the Minnesotans this season as they battle to enter the postseason.
Cartagena’s Jhon Romero, who is on the 60-day disabled list, plays on the same team. He has played only four games – all as reliever – and has neither won nor lost. His ERA stands at 3.60.
Ramirez is not false. If we’re talking about another player who hasn’t cost him the team change this season, it’s Harold Ramírez, who made the jump from the Cleveland Guardians to the Tampa Bay Rays.
While there is a lot of rotation in his team, his work as a designated batter has decided several games. In 93 at bats, he registered 26 hits, scored 11 runs and 11 RBI. His batting average is .280. And every time he gets the chance, he shows why he’s a constant threat to opposing pitchers.
Barranquilla pitcher Luis Patiño also plays in the Florida state ninth. However, his luck was not the best. He has thrown only 0.2 innings, as he was injured in his debut game in which he started.
His problems were initially reported to be minor, but his team put him on the 60-day disabled list a few weeks ago, so his return to the fields is still a mystery.
At the parents. In this season of the Major Leagues, a historic event was accomplished for the country: for the first time, a Colombian pitcher and a catcher played a game for the same team.
The two protagonists were Barranquilla-pitcher Nabil Crismatt Abuchaibe and Sinceleja-catcher Jorge Alfaro. Both have earned their place with the San Diego Padres thanks to their good performances.
The Atlanticense played in 12 games and took two wins. He still doesn’t know what a defeat is in this campaign. He has 18 strikeouts and no home runs. His age is 1.25. Beautiful figures for the currambero jug.
Alfaro, for his part, has registered 16 hits, scored six runs, connected two flyers and drove 10 lines in 68 at bats. His batting average is .235.
Market responds. He’s not a leading man with the Cleveland Guardians, but when they need him, he’s there. Cartagena’s scar Mercado’s performance this season is something to talk about as he is the Colombian who has hit the most home runs.
In 85 at bats, he has 17 hits, has scored nine runs, has driven 15 lines and has four home runs. His average is 0.200. and his ninth is currently third in the AL Central with 18 wins and 20 losses.
Quintana, experience. Among the many young Colombians currently playing in the Majors, the experience of José Quintana from Bolivar with the Pittsburgh Pirates stood out.
The southpaw, from Arjona, Bolivar, has had the chance to start in eight games this season. His balance has won one game and lost two, but it should be noted that in the games he played without a decision, his performance was good, but his team did not accompany him.
In 40.2 innings pitched, he struckout 34 batters, registered only 33 basehits and scored his 14 earned runs. He has allowed two home runs. His age is 2.43.
His team is fourth in the Central Division of the National League with a record of 17 wins and four defeats.
The Colombians will certainly continue to stand out over time with ‘vuelacercas’ or with strikeouts, and some others, such as Patiño, Romero or Donovan Solano, who are injured, will be able to join their novenas and will start talking too in the best baseball in the world.
