Royal Antwerp FC has suffered another disappointment since the club appointed the acclaimed Marc Overmars as manager. Clothing sponsor Nike has decided to cancel a partnership. The reason seems to be the arrival of the controversial Dutchman.
Antwerp newspaper He writes on Wednesday that Nike had questions about the selection of Antwerp for Overmars and ultimately decided not to cooperate. The well-known sports brand would stay with the club for three years.
Antwerp has now opted for an extensive collaboration with JAKO, a spokesperson for this brand confirms. “The request came a few weeks ago. It is our intention to work together again for another three years.”
Overmars started in Antwerp in March, barely two months after his departure from Ajax. His position in Amsterdam became untenable when he was found guilty of excessive behavior towards his female colleagues.
Overmars’ arrival received a lot of criticism in Antwerp, especially from the Belgian football association and politicians. The club from the Jupiler Pro League has already seen several sponsors withdraw.
Overmars fired manager Brian Priske on Monday and appears to be focusing on Mark van Bommel as their new manager.
Royal Antwerp is at the top of the Belgian league this season.
