Fighting has been going on for days in Severodonetsk, located on the Donets River. According to the local government, many people have fled. Before the war, the city had about 130,000 inhabitants. About a tenth of that would be left behind.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video message on Thursday that he feared the Donets Basin could be drained by a Russian offensive. “The continued offensive by the invaders into the Donets Basin could leave the region desolate,” Zelensky said. He described the situation as an “open genocide policy”.
