11:13 ADO The Hague is covered in dust after riots: ‘Words are too embarrassing’

ADO Den Haag went through the dust on Monday due to setbacks during and after the loss against Excelsior for promotion to the Eredivisie on Sunday. Supporters of the club of the Kitchen Champion Division wanted a confrontation with supporters of Excelsior and Mobile Unit (ME).

“We are deeply ashamed of what happened yesterday,” ADO said in a statement. “We sincerely apologize to the fans who did not feel safe in and around the stadium, especially the Excelsior fans, players and staff. It is too embarrassing to put into words.”

ADO secured promotion to the Eredivisie in its own stadium on Sunday, but Hagenaren took a 3-0 lead in the last fifteen minutes. In the deciding penalty shootout – the score was 4-4 after extra time – Excelsior won, after which the fanatical ADO fans poured onto the field.

Excelsior players and staff had to rush to the changing rooms for their own safety. Meanwhile, enraged ADO fans threw fireworks and other items into the box with Excelsior fans. It was also active outside the stadium. Four police officers were injured in the incidents.

ADO says ‘it is doing everything it can’ to find and punish the perpetrators. “All camera images inside and outside the stadium are being viewed. We do not want to anticipate the measures, but long-term stadium bans will also be part of the measures.”

‘The club is in bad shape due to such incidents’

The game was threatening to rise before the end of the game. Dozens of fans had left their seats and were descending onto the field, even stopping halfway, in preparation for the storm.

Excelsior coach Marinus Dijkhuizen says there was a fan in his seat in the first half of extra time after the difficult play-off final. ADO coach Giovanni Franken spoke of “foreign scenes” and said his work was hindered by fans.

“The Cars Jeans Stadium must be an open and accessible place for everyone, where every visitor must feel safe,” the ADO writes. “At the moment, the image of the club is very serious, as are the material damage and possible fines. Incidents like this have put the club in a bad position.”

The KNVB has not yet responded to the riots on Sunday. It is not yet clear whether the football association will make a statement. Due to the chaos in and around Cars Jeans Stadium, an investigation could be started and ADO was fined.
