Despite a rough start, Iga Swiatek reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros on Monday. This means that the quarterfinals of the women’s tournament are all sold out.
Swiatek fought in one set against the number 74 in the world Zheng Qinwen. He won the match, partly due to the physical discomfort of his Chinese opponent: 6-7 (5), 6-0 and 6-2.
Swiatek expects to face Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals. The American (WTA-11) already won three sets earlier in the day against Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu: 4-6, 6-2 and 6-3.
Swiatek, 20, has been in first place in the world rankings since Ashleigh Barty decided to leave immediately in early April. The Poles showed their form by winning the clay tournament in Rome two weeks ago.
Swiatek now has 32 consecutive wins. He won Roland Garros two years ago and claimed his only Grand Slam title to date. Last year’s winner, Barbora Krejcíková, has already lost in the first round this time.
Earlier in the day, Russian Daria Kasatkina and Veronika Kudermetova also advanced to the quarterfinals in Paris. Kasatkina was too big for Italian Camila Giorgi (6-2, 6-2), and Kudermetova defeated American Madison Keys 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Jessica Pegula is Iga Swiatek’s next rival.
