The Swiss prosecutor’s office on Wednesday demanded a 20-month suspended sentence against former top football player Michel Platini and former president of the world football federation FIFA, Sepp Blatter. Both are suspected of committing suspicious activities.
Blatter, 86, paid Platini a total of 2 million Swiss francs (about €1.8 million) as FIFA director in 2011. According to Blatter, the French footballer was entitled to this amount because of his work at FIFA between 1998-2002.
In their own words, Blatter and Platini had agreed verbally. The payment was not made until nine years later. Shortly afterwards, the World Cups were awarded to Russia and Qatar and Blatter was re-elected FIFA president.
The suspicious payment prompted the Swiss prosecutor to open an investigation. Frankly, the two have ripped off FIFA. “Blatter and Platini acted purely for selfish and monetary purposes,” the prosecutor said on Wednesday. Said.
The World Football Association suspended Blatter in 2015 for suspicious payments by Platini, who resigned in 2016 as head of the European football federation UEFA. Blatter has been FIFA President since 1998 and has not held an official football role since his expulsion from the World Football Association.
The process surrounding the suspicious payment will run until June 22. A decision is expected on July 8.
