Kai Verbij finished seventh in the first 500 meters in the World Cup final in Heerenveen. At the shortest distance, the 27-year-old Dutch champion became the fastest Dutchman with 34.97 seconds. The victory over Thialf went to Japan’s Tatsuya Shinhama with 34.38.
Shinhama fell with 34.53 under the time of compatriot Wataru Morishige and Canadian Laurent Dubreuil. Dubreuil had to relinquish the lead halfway through the World Cup sprint in Norway last week after a positive corona test. He came late in Canadian Heerenveen, but that didn’t stop him from going faster than Verbij’s best time of 34.53. Morishige was just as quick in the journey later on.
Merijn Scheperkamp was just behind Verbij with 35.01 and finished eighth. He was faster than teammate Dai Dai N’tab in the race. This came after a slow start at 35.43. He finished fourteenth and last. Hein Otterspeer set the thirteenth time of the first stage at 35.36.
