Russian tennis star Natela Dzalamidze will be allowed to participate in Wimbledon as a Georgian from next week. He recently naturalized, circumventing the ban on players from Russia and Belarus because of the war in Ukraine.
Dzalamidze was born in Moscow, the capital of Russia. The WTA tennis organization apparently approved the change because the Georgian is now listed as a citizen along with his passport.
Duo with Krunic
Dzalamidze, 29, will compete with Serbian Aleksandra Krunic, who was born to a Serbian family in Moscow, at Wimbledon in doubles. With Kamilla Rachimova, he formed a Russian duo in women’s doubles at Roland Garros, where Russian and Belarusian players were received under a neutral flag.
At the end of April, Wimbledon organizers announced that Russian and Belarusian tennis players were not welcome because of their country’s involvement in the war in Ukraine. Daniil Medvedev, Aryna Sabalenka, Andrei Roeblev and Victoria Azarenka, among others, are not allowed to participate in the grass field tournament in London.
