Schermer Tulen took the first silver medal at the European Championships since Verwijsen in 2011.

Fencer Tristan Tulen made a show by winning a silver medal in epee at the European Championships in Antalya. After a few big victories, he didn’t stand a chance in the final against the number four in the world Yannick Borel: 1-15. The silver medal is the first Dutch medal won at the European Championships since 2011, when Bas Verlijken finished second.

Tulen, 30, is world number 57. On his way to his first major final, he defeated Frenchman Alex Fava (FIE-26), Finn Niko Vuorinen (FIE-30) and Swiss Alexis Bayard (FIE-41).

In the last battle, the European champion of 2016, 2017 and 2018 and the world champion of 2018 Borel turned out to be a huge body. Tulen tried to score, but the 33-year-old Frenchman calmly waited for every attack and scored every time. Tulen only scored 0-11.

screen family

Tristan Tulen grew up in a fencing family, although he was the one who brought the family to fencing. Tulen started at the age of seven at a fencing club in Den Bosch. Shortly afterwards, his brother and two sisters were also given a sword. Just like the father who was once president of the local fencing club.

Today Tulen is trained and coached by his brother Rafael, who is six years younger and still a fencer. In a conversation with TeamNL in October last year, they said it was a dream come true to go to the Olympics together. But the Netherlands is still too low in the world ranking to be allowed to go to the Games with a few fencers.
