Dumoulin aims for a good end point in Australia

The main goal is later this year, but Tom Dumoulin would have wanted to win the title for the fifth time in his last race in a Dutch time trial championship. But Bauke Mollema was a surprise to him on Wednesday in Emmen. “There are still a few nice matches in the offing,” the Limburger from Jumbo-Visma predicted. Dumoulin will stop cycling for good this fall.

Dumoulin (31) sees the World Cup in Wollongong, Australia as a happy ending. After a somewhat disappointing performance, he said: “I also rode my first world title as a U23 in Australia. “I have good memories of that,” he says. “I’m always second, right?” He laughed. A back injury that forced him to dismount at the start of the Giro d’Italia, however, prevented a good preparation. “I had hoped that I could recover with two weeks of vacation, and here I was hoping for more. But if you can’t train fully, you will immediately lose your level. Actually, you’re wrong.”

The plan was to go to the World Cup with the Tour of Poland and the Benelux Tour. Now that the last game has been cancelled, another plan is being sought. A time trial at the European Championships in Munich is also possible. But right now I might be preparing for the World Cup at the top.”

He often realizes that he has spent his last months as a cycling professional. “Charging is no problem. Today I am focused. I have announced that I will stop, but I want to finish my career on a good note. I haven’t let go of the reins yet.”
