Fencer María de los Ángeles Jaramillo gave Colombia its first gold medal of the Valledupar-2022 Bolivarian Games by beating Peruvian María Luisa Doig 15-13 in the individual epee final yesterday at Club Campestre, in Caesar’s capital.
“I am very happy, I have already given Colombia its first gold medal and I know many more will follow. It was a very exciting final, I managed to come back, it was very strong,” said Jaramillo.
Before climbing to the top of the podium, the Colombian got rid of Bárbara García, from Chile; Maria Benedito, from Panama; Luz Bustos, from Bolivia, Violeta Ramírez, from the Dominican Republic, in the first stage of the competition.
She then defeated Ecuadorian Priscila Sulen (round of 16), Panamanian Alessandra Aicardi (quarter-final) and Paraguayan Gabriela Monserrat Viveros (semi-final), who won the bronze along with Venezuelan Lizze Asis.
Colombian Santiago Pachón won the bronze medal in the individual foil. The gold went to Peruvian L. Lutar, while the silver went to Venezuelan A. Leal.
