The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has added eight new medal events to its schedule for the 2026 Winter Olympics. The goal is for the Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo tournament to become the most equal edition of the Olympic Games. †
The IOC strives for an equal distribution between men and women in the number of sports and events, as well as the participating athletes. In 2014 (Sochi) 40% of the total number of participants was female, four years later this share will be 47%.
“We have made significant progress in closing the gender gap at the Winter Games,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. We are determined to achieve even greater equality and Milan-Cortina will be another important step in this regard.”
Good news for Kramer
The big jump ski jump is one of the new segments for women. Until now, there has been only a small incline in the women’s Olympic program. This led to more criticism from the IOC.
The women were supported by the male top jumper Halvor Egner Granerud during the last Winter Games, which were held in Beijing in February. “There is no doubt that they are ready for the big jump in the Olympic program,” said the Norwegian.
