Sharon van Rouwendaal failed to win a medal in the 5-kilometer race at the World Swimming Championships in Hungary on Monday. The Dutch finished tenth at Lake Lupa.
Van Rouwendaal, 28, scored at 58.08.90 to give Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha 16 seconds in the non-Olympic division. The Olympic champion 10km won the sprint in the leading group and won her sixth world title in the open water.
The 30-year-old Cunha extended his title on the shortest open sea with the victory. France’s Aurélie Muller came second after the Brazilian. The bronze medal went to Italy’s Giulia Gabbrielleschi.
The world title is the only one that is still missing from Van Rouwendaal’s honors list. The Baarn native won three silver World Cup medals and became the 10,000 Olympic champion in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He finished second after Cunha at the Tokyo Games last year.
Van Rouwendaal still has two chances for his first World Cup title. Wednesday starts at the 10km and Thursday is the 25km program.
In the men’s world championship over 5 kilometers went to the Olympic champion of Tokyo over two distances, Florian Wellbrock. The German is almost four seconds ahead of Gregorio Paltrinieri. Mikhail Romanchuk won the bronze medal.
Sharon van Rouwendaal is still waiting for her first World Cup title.
