German football is mourning the death of Uwe Seeler, legendary bomber ofHamburg and Teutonic football icon. The announcement came from the club for which he played for twenty years, from 16 to 36 years old, and of which he is the all-time striker with 507 goals in 587 games. Seeler was the captain of the Germany on the occasion of the semifinal of the 1970 World Cup, at the Azteca Stadium, in Mexico City, against Italy. He finished third in the Ballon d’Or in 1960.

“We’re sorry Uwe Seeler. The greatest HSVer of all time has died aged 85. Rest in peace dear Uwe”: this is Hamburg’s announcement on its social profiles to communicate the death of Der Dicke (“the Great”), who in his career won nine consecutive Oberliga Nord championships (from 1955 to 1963), a German championship (1960) and a German Cup (1963). He was named German Footballer of the Year in 1960, 1964 and 1970.
The rejection of an important offer from Inter in 1961 allowed him to forever win a place in the hearts of Hamburg fans. He was president of HSV from October 1995 to June 1998.
As already mentioned, he was also a symbol of the German national team with 72 games and 43 goals. He was captain forty times and it was he who wore the armband in the legendary 1970 World Cup match, when Italy won 4-3 and qualified for the final after 120′ that are still remembered today as ‘El Partido del Siglo ‘ . Seeler played in four World Cups, from 1958 to 1970, and in 1966 he started in the final lost to the English at Wembley.

He was the first player to play twenty World Cup matches (21 in all) and the first to score in four editions of the Cup: he shared that record with Pele and was only recently defeated by Miroslav Klose and Cristiano Ronaldo.
