A little less than a year after the Olympics, Femke Bol again competes in a major track and field final in the 400-meter hurdles. Friday-Saturday evening (Dutch time) he will compete in Tokyo against two finishers at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene. American Sydney McLaughlin won gold in a world record, compatriot Dalilah Mohammed won silver.
For Bol, the Olympic bronze remains, but Eugene wants more. Although McLaughlin raised the world record to 51.41 this year, Bol does not consider himself unlucky. According to his coach Laurent Meuwly, he may be able to surprise him in the form and final of his life.
The 22-year-old Amersfoortse is still unbeaten in the 400 meter hurdles this year. He won every Diamond League race he entered due to force majeure. He was also unstoppable in the World Cup series and in the semi-finals against Eugene. He finished second in the final with a time of 52.84. McLaughlin was the fastest with 52.17. Bol will start in lane 4, McLaughlin will start in lane 5 and Mohammed will start in lane 6.
Lieke Klaver ran her first World Cup final in the 400 meters. He is also in top form in Eugene. The 23-year-old broke the Dutch record of 50.24 in the series and brought it to 50.18 in the semifinals. Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo, two-time Olympic champion, reached the final fastest with a time of 49.55 and was favorite for gold.
Bol and Klaver already won silver in the 4×400m medley relay at this World Cup.
