A water taxi capsized on Thursday afternoon after a collision with a tour boat under the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam. A spokesperson for the Rotterdam Security Zone tells NU.nl that six people have been removed from the water.
It’s about a captain and five passengers. Among them was a child. All six people were hospitalized for observation. No one is missing, according to the security zone.
The incident was seen on CCTV footage. This shows that the water taxi first moved next to the tour boat. Once under the bridge, the water taxi collides with the side of the ship. How exactly this could have happened is still unclear.
Emergency services intervened en masse. According to a NU.nl reporter on site, there were at least eight police cars, four ambulances and two fire engines. An air ambulance was also present, which left just after 2 p.m. There are many spectators on the Erasmus Bridge.
The security zone says a plan has been developed to save the water taxi. Ships can again pass through the collision zone and the obstruction has been removed.
The captain was “very impressed” by the incident
The water taxi captain has been working for the company that owns the boats since 1993. According to Daan van der Have, one of the owners of the company, FATHER. Van der Have thinks it is still too early to speculate about the culprit.
According to the owner, everyone in the water taxi is doing well. Six people were rescued from the water by other water taxis. “The captain was very impressed by what happened,” says Van der Have.
