Portugal has seven footballers on Tuttosport newspaper’s list of nominees for the Golden Boy award, which honors the most promising player under 21 to play in Europe, shortened from 100 to 60 players this Monday.
As for the list of 100 nominees, released in June, Portugal lost three players, all linked to Sporting: Rodrigo Ribeiro, Tiago Tomás, who is on loan to Stuttgart, and Joelson Fernandes, who is on loan to Basel.
On the list, voted in succession until reduced to a group of 20 finalists, Francisco Conceição (Ajax/Hol), Diego Moreira (Benfica), Fábio Carvalho (Liverpool/Ing), Fábio Silva (Anderlecht/Bel) , Henrique Araújo (Benfica), Nuno Mendes (Paris Saint-Germain/Fra) and Paulo Bernardo (Benfica) are now the Portuguese nominees.
Former Benfica players João Félix (Atlético Madrid, Esp) and Renato Sanches (Paris Saint-Germain, Fra) have already awarded the Portuguese the ‘Golden Boy’ award in 2019 and 2016 respectively.
