The Prime Minister, António Costa, and the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, congratulated Pedro Pichardo on Wednesday for winning the European triple jump title at the European Championships in Munich, Germany.

On the social network Twitter, António Costa congratulated Pichardo, who added this medal to Iúri Leitão’s gold, in track cycling scratch, and to Auriol Dongmo’s silver, in shot put.

The head of government also associated these achievements with the bronze medals of Diogo Ribeiro and Gabriel Lopes, although these have been achieved in other European swimming championships, in Rome, which took place simultaneously.

“What pride for Portugal. Congratulations to all,” he wrote.

Augusto Santos Silva recalled that Pichardo’s European title joins that of world champion, achieved in Eugenio, last month, and Olympic gold, in Tokyo 2020.

“Portugal is proud of the achievements of this citizen who chose to be Portuguese,” he stressed, on the same social network.

The Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, João Paulo Correia, also chose Twitter to mark “another ‘flight’ to a gold medal.”

“A victory for national athletics, of which we are very proud,” he said.

The Setúbal City Council also sent a congratulatory note to the athlete, who trains in that city.

Pedro Pablo Pichardo was proclaimed today the triple jump European champion by ‘flying’ 17.50 meters, adding this success to the world and Olympic titles and giving Portugal the third podium in the Munich sports event, in a final in the that Tiago Pereira was eighth.

The second edition of the multi-sport European championship takes place in Munich until Sunday and brings together nine sports, with Portugal represented in seven, namely athletics, canoeing, cycling, artistic gymnastics, rowing, table tennis and triathlon.

The Portuguese team has so far won three medals, two gold, from Pedro Pablo Pichardo in triple jump and the cyclist Iúri Leitão, in scratch, in track cycling, and one silver, from Auriol Dongmo, in shot put.
