The men’s 4×400 meter relay broke the national distance record this Friday, with 3:03:59 minutes, but ended up eliminated at the European Athletics Championships in Munich, Germany.
The Portuguese quartet, made up of João Coelho, Mauro Pereira, Ericsson Tavares and Ricardo dos Santos, beat the previous best national record (3.05.48), which already dated from 1995, in Fukuoka, Japan, by two seconds, in a quartet made up of Carlos Silva, António Abrantes, Mário Reis and Pedro Rodrigues, but failed to qualify for the final of the race, finishing in 10th place overall.
The second edition of the multi-sport European championship takes place in Munich until Sunday and brings together nine sports, with Portugal represented in seven, namely athletics, canoeing, cycling, artistic gymnastics, rowing, table tennis and triathlon.
The Portuguese team has won three medals so far, two gold, from Pedro Pablo Pichardo, in triple jump, and Iúri Leitão, in track cycling scratch, and one silver, from Auriol Dongmo, in shot put.
