American Serena Williams lost 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1 to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open this Friday, in a match that could mark the end of her storied career.
Williams, 40, assured in a recent interview that she is ready to leave tennis and suggested it would be after this US Open.
The American won 73 trophies in her career, including 23 ‘majors’, with seven Wimbledons, seven Australian Opens, six US Opens and three Roland Garros.
When asked if there’s any chance her decision will be reconsidered, Serena said on the pitch: “I don’t think so, but you never know. I don’t know.”
Tomjanovic, after his win, achieved after Williams annulled five match balls, assured that the American is “the best ever” and that “tennis won’t be the same” after his retirement.
