Daniel Galán returns from New York as 94th in the ATP

Colombian tennis player Daniel Elahi Galán Riveros was eliminated from his first US Open yesterday with a feeling that his game has improved and that he can progress beyond the third round for the next Grand Slam tournaments he plays.

Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (39 at the ATP) sent Galán home after beating him 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 and 6-4 in three sets.

The one from Malaga, Spain suffered from Galán’s powerful base game, his surgical serve, crosses, corner shots and reaching the net to release unreachable balloons. But Dadidovich found solutions to undermine it.

He moved it from side to side, he physically demanded it and with his returns and first serve, he overwhelmed the Colombian.

Daniel Galán lost the first set with a rocky start on Court 17 of the New York Open.

The intentions of the Spaniards were manifested by breaking the Colombian’s first serve.

Galán was not very precise in his first serve and the key to bringing the blond Spaniard to his field.

In the second set, the Colombian returned the formula with a break on the last ball. But first he had to row from less to more after losing the first serve of the set again. He trailed 0-2 and eventually won the set with a definition on the last ball that drew applause: he went to the net and after a drop shot from the Spaniard, the Colombian defined with a solid blow.

In the third set, Galán put the pressure on, trailing 1-5 and Davidovich falling on a gap in the next three contested runs.

The tennis player from Bucaramanga surprised again by bringing the match to a narrow and pressure area with a 4-5 against. But in the end, the Spaniard was able to equalize the set with a break and won 6-4.

The final chapter was resolved with Alejandro Davidovich coming out of the hole again and unforced errors. After starting 2-4 down, he took advantage of the fact that Galán found no comfort in sending balls back to the corners of the field and equalized 4-4. With this emotional jump, he went on to win 6-4 against a Galán at the end who either made him or claimed him before the chair umpire.

Davidovich had grown with the breath of a gallery that enjoyed a match that can be summed up in the final eight ball that lasted more than 8 minutes.

Galán leaves New York with a small prize: he entered the Us Open as 100 in the ATP and is now ranked 94th in the world for the first time after his two victories: the most resounding in the first round against number 5 of the world, the Greek Stefano Tsitsipas.

The ATP qualified Daniel Galán on its website as the first on the vegetarian circuit and with a strict diet without animal meat. “I’ve never eaten meat or eggs in my life. Dairy, yes. Food and environmental awareness was taught to me from birth. And as a tennis player I haven’t felt that it affects me. I will continue the same.”

In other US Men’s Open results, Frenchman Corentin Moutet advanced to the quarterfinals, beating Argentina’s Pedro Cachín 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Italian Matteo Berrettini defeated Briton Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (1-7) and 3-6. Norwegian Casper Ruud defeated Tommy Paul 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (5-7), 5-7 and 6-0.
