It was 2018 when Carlos Ancelotti made his return to the Serie A bench after an extraordinary victory at Milan. Nine years after the last time, it was Napoli who convinced the Reggiolo coach to join the Azzurri cause. At the end of the first season, the Naples in the second year with Ancelotti as coach, he had a disappointing start to the championship and there was a lot of nervousness among the team, the club and the fans. The exemption came in December 2019 just before Gattuso took over the reins of the team. A path that from that moment practically started a new project for the club of Aurelio De Laurentiis. In fact, during an interview with Corriere dello Sport, Cristiano Giuntoli, sporting director of the Azzurra, retraces those moments that marked the beginning of a new era in Naples.

Immediately following Gattuso’s arrival in December 2019, 2020 was the year we can all probably never forget. The pandemic due to Covid-19 and above all the forced quarantine marked an era, and in terms of sports too that of Naples. Today the team coached by Spalletti can count on a player of the caliber of kvaratskelia that is dragging the Neapolitans. “The first time I saw Khvicha in a video, we were in the heart of the lockdown – explained Giuntoli speaking in Georgian – He must have been nineteen, but he was already good with his feet. Rino was still there and we liked him right away, I remember we called Kaladze to find out more.” Hence the beginning of a story that also reveals the background to Ancelotti’s farewell.

Kvaratskhelia immediately took the keys to Napoli’s attack. There, in Insigne’s place, he is making a big impression with goals, assists and sensational plays, such as those admired also on the occasion of the last extraordinary victory in the Champions League against Liverpool. “He moved to Lokomotiv Moscow, unsurprisingly, but at Rubin Kazan he was doing better. – says Giuntoli – They asked us for thirty million, we closed the contacts before even starting a negotiation. We were after Osimhen, we couldn’t bet that much on a boy but he stayed in my head”. Paradoxically, it was the war between Russia and Ukraine that opened the deal: “When the conflict broke out in February, he went back to Georgia at Dinamo Batumi and we went down there with the contract. We closed for ten million.”

Much for the more than satisfactory performance of the player able to convince everyone from the first days in Campania. Giuntoli during the first half also spoke about Carlo Ancelotti again. The Emiliano coach’s farewell seemed almost hasty to some and the latest Champions League victory on the bench at Real Madrid has heightened regrets for the good he could have done in Naples. But the problems that had been created with him were so many and Giuntoli couldn’t help but remember them, revealing the background: “All the players loved Carlo, but they unconsciously rejected the tactical changes he wanted to impose – Giuntoli said very clearly – There was unconscious resistance, which some negative results made it stronger.”
