Fourth-seeded Nadal got off to a bad start at Indian Wells. He immediately lost his serve and did it again. Fritz, who was number 20 on the seeding list, ran 4-0. Nadal didn’t seem particularly in shape either, taking painkillers in between games. The Spaniard, who recorded heavy victories over Australian Nick Kyrgios and his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, came back from the break, but saw the set go to Fritz 6-3. Then he sought medical help.
Nadal recovered somewhat in the second set. He timed out at 2-1, but immediately relinquished the lead. From 3-3, the two tennis players ensured exciting matches and long rallies, in which the American survived the necessary breakpoints. For Fritz, Nadal was treated again at 5-4 by the physiotherapist who massaged his back.
Fritz then reached the first game point, but the Spaniard did what he wanted and tied the score again. At the tiebreak, Fritz took the second game point at 6-5. Now it has completed its own service.
Nadal is unbeaten in 2022. He won his 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January and won another Grand Slam over rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. He also won the ATP tournaments in Melbourne and Acapulco.
