After another marathon of five sets, four hours and 19 minutes, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz once again took out his competitive soul this Friday to beat American Frances Tiafoe 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-1, 6- 7(5) and 6-3 and qualify for the final of the US Open against Norwegian Casper Ruud, in a duel that will put the glory of New York and the first position in the world ranking on the line.
At 19 years old and already with two Masters 1,000 titles in his showcases, Alcaraz is one match away from the first ‘Grand Slam’ of his career to the skies, after taking down a Tiafoe who reached the semi-finals after knocking out Spain’s Rafa Nadal and Russian Andrey Rublev.
The Murcian, who won his last three games in New York in five sets, at 19 years and one month may become the youngest US Open champion since American Pete Sampras in 1990.
Whoever wins the final this Sunday will dethrone the Russian Daniil Medvedev and become the new number one in the world, with Alcaraz rising three places in the ranking and Ruud rising to six, a record.
