Amazon acquires film and television intellectual property rights to Warhammer 40,000.

Amazon today announced that it has signed an agreement with Games Workshop (GAW) giving it intellectual property rights to Warhammer 40,000, an extremely popular miniature war game. This is the first deal of its kind for Amazon, the company says.

Warhammer 40,000 is set in the distant future where aliens and supernatural creatures threaten humanity. The game was launched almost 40 years ago and is constantly expanding and GAW has many miniatures, board games, video games, animations and books.

The deal allows Amazon to supply films and TV series, among other things. This is a remarkable move for the company, as the Warhammer 40,000 universe is one of epic proportions and has a huge fan base around the world.

“Warhammer 40,000 has captured the imagination of fans of all ages, walks of life and around the world,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon and MGM Studios, said in a statement.

Man of Steel and The Witcher actor Henry Cavill will star in and serve as an executive producer of the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. Knowing that Cavill will participate in new Warhammer 40,000 content may be comforting to some given his reputation as a hardcore “Warhammer” nerd.

In an Instagram post, Cavill wrote, “It has been my dream for 30 years to see a Warhammer universe live. Now, after 22 years in this industry, I finally feel I have the skills and experience to bring a Warhammer movie universe to life… A house like Amazon gives us the freedom to explore the vast reach of Warhammer. embrace to stay faithful. 🇧🇷 To all Warhammer fans, I promise to respect this intellectual property we love. And I strive to bring you something fantastic that has never been seen before.

In addition to Cavill, Vertigo Entertainment will also executive produce along with Amazon Studios and GAW Global Head of Marketing and Media Andy Smillie and Global Head of Intellectual Property and Product Design Max Bottrill.

It is remarkable that it was recently confirmed Cavill would not return as Superman. Fans were outraged all week, with nearly 4,000 people signing numerous petitions calling for his return. Cavil is also leaving Netflix’s The Witcher after three seasons, relinquishing his role as Geralt of Rivia and passing the torch to Hunger Games actor Liam Hemsworth.
