It was banned for two years, but Donald Trump will soon be back on Facebook and Instagram. Social media company Meta said the suspension of the former US President will be lifted “in the coming weeks”.
Nick Clegg, former UK Deputy Prime Minister and now an executive at Meta, says people should be able to hear what politicians are saying. Clegg warned that Trump was being watched. They say if it crosses another border, further action will be taken. Messages can be deleted or their range restricted. No further suspension is excluded.
Trump suspended following the attack on the Capitol in early January 2021; Meta said their provocative messages led to violence and therefore constituted a “grave violation” of our rules. Twitter also blocked it, but it was reinstated there after Elon Musk took over.
Trump launched his own social media platform, Truth Social, after his suspension. He says he later lost billions by Facebook deciding to ban him. “This should never happen to an incumbent president or anyone who doesn’t deserve it again,” he writes.
Trump, 76, announced in November that he would like to attempt to become another president.
