Many manufacturers do not notify consumers of smart product updates –

Smart product manufacturers don’t always tell consumers how long to expect software updates. But one in five manufacturers informs users about it, according to a survey by the Consumers’ Association on Thursday.

Last year, researchers from the consumer organization checked the websites of 86 manufacturers active in 18 product lines. Think of smartphones, doorbells, lighting and televisions. According to the union, only 19 manufacturers (22%) had information about the updates on their websites.

Manufacturers are in better shape than 2020. Subsequently, 14% of manufacturers informed consumers about the updates. The improvement is mainly seen in smartphone, television and lighting manufacturers. In particular, white goods manufacturers do not notify users of updates.

“Everyone knows how important digital security is,” says Sandra Molenaar, director of the Consumers’ Association. “The update is very important in that regard. But consumers often don’t know what to expect.”

The Consumers’ Association advises consumers to only purchase smart products, as it is clear that they will receive software updates for at least a few years.
