Young man sentenced to indefinite prison for GTA hack

A British judge sentenced Arion Kurtaj, 18, of Oxford, England, to indefinite prison for stealing and distributing images from the unreleased Grand Theft Auto 6 game. The man, who has autistic disorder, carried out the hack under the influence of drugs while under house arrest for another digital intrusion.

Kurtaj managed to hack Rockstar Games, the developer of the very popular game, in September last year. He managed to get ninety clips from the presenter.

He then hacked into Rockstar’s communication channel and threatened to share the clips if he didn’t get millions. “If Rockstar does not contact me via Telegram within 24 hours, I will share the images. “I will start releasing the source code.”

After Rockstar did not respond to his request for payment, Kurtaj posted the clips on a fan forum. This allowed the visuals of the long-awaited GTA 6 to be shared with everyone.

Hack with your mobile phone and TV

The teenager did all this while out on bail for a hacking attack on tech company Nvidia. He was placed under house arrest and placed in a hotel room under police guard.

His laptop was seized for the investigation, but he managed to break into Rockstar with the help of his streaming box, television and mobile phone. Repairing the damage cost the company 4 million euros.

Kurtaj is a member of the hacker group Lapsus$, which is responsible for attacks on the phone company Uber and thus on Rockstar Games. It is estimated that the attacks cost companies approximately $10 million. The group of digital bandits consists mostly of young people from the UK and possibly Brazil. It’s unclear how much Lapsus$ made from the hacks.

There is a high probability of recurrence

According to the judge, there is a high probability that Arion Kurtaj will commit another crime. During the hearing it emerged that he was “highly motivated” to hack and intended to be released as soon as possible. Therefore, the judge believes that TBS without an end date is necessary, even if it is required for life.

A 17-year-old boy from the group was also convicted. He was given a youth order, meaning he will be supervised for the next year and a half.

18 months after the hack, Rockstar has officially presented the first taste of the game, which is planned to be released in 2025.
