Chinese manufacturer stops selling drones to Russia and Ukraine

DJI Technology temporarily suspends its operations in Russia and Ukraine to prevent the use of drones in wartime. This makes DJI the first major Chinese company to end sales to Russia since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February.

“DJI is internally evaluating regulations in multiple jurisdictions,” the private company said Tuesday evening. said. “Pending this review, DJI will temporarily suspend all business activities in Russia and Ukraine.”

While many Western companies withdrew from Russia in protest, many Chinese companies stayed there. In doing so, they align themselves with Beijing’s stance, which is not criticizing Moscow over the invasion.

“Suspension is not for explanation”

A DJI spokesperson told Reuters on Wednesday that the suspension of business activities in Russia and Ukraine was “not to make a statement about any country, but to promote our principles.”

“DJI denies any use of our drones to cause harm, and we are temporarily suspending sales in these countries to ensure that no one is using our drones for warfare.”

Ukrainian authorities and citizens have accused DJI, the world’s largest manufacturer of consumer and commercial drones, of leaking data about the Ukrainian military to Russia.

DJI says it has no control over the use of drones

Last month, DJI dismissed these claims as “totally false”. A German retailer used this information to justify the removal of DJI products from its shelves.

While the company has seen images online of the Russian military using its products, a DJI spokesperson in March said this was not confirmed and the company has no control over the use of its products.

“We are in discussions with customers, partners and other stakeholders regarding the temporary cessation of operations in the affected areas,” the company said in a statement.
