Microsoft said in the report that at least six Russian-affiliated hacker groups were involved in cyber attacks on Ukraine. Between February 23 and April 8 alone, Microsoft witnessed 37 Russian cyber attacks on Ukraine.
According to Microsoft, cyber operations may have laid the foundation for several military missions in Ukraine. The cyber attacks were launched on February 24 a year before the start of the Russian invasion.
Microsoft believes that Russian hacking attacks and military operations often work together toward a common goal. For example, on March 1, the day a Russian missile was fired at the Kiev TV tower, the capital’s media companies were hit by devastating attacks and cyber espionage. A Russian hacker also stole data from a nuclear security agency the day before Russian troops took over a nuclear power plant.
“Cyber attacks not only affected the systems of Ukrainian institutions, but also aimed to deny civilians access to reliable information and critical services, and to undermine citizens’ trust in the country’s leadership,” Microsoft said. “We have also observed limited espionage attacks on NATO member states,” he said.
