“Google recognizes 2,500 malicious Bitcoin ads featuring celebrities” –

Google admitted to showing more than 2,500 misleading bitcoin ads with the names and photos of Jort Kelder (57), Alexander Klöpping (35), Arjen Lubach (42) and Willem Middelkoop (59). Their lawyer, Matthijs Kaaks, said in an Amsterdam court on Tuesday that prominent Dutch people had asked Google to stop advertising in the form of news articles.

“It’s about making people click. Google is responsible for this”

During the hearing, the lawyer said Google said 8,500 of the more than 11,000 ads featuring the famous Dutchman’s names had previously been filtered by Google. “The problem is much bigger, because there are so many more public figures who are the victims,” says Matthijs Kaaks. “In a quarter of the cases, false advertisements are shown for bitcoin,” the lawyer calculated.

Kaaks described 77% of the filtered messages as disappointment. Google lawyers say the company has managed to keep malicious advertisers at bay. “Google is working hard to provide a clean ad network,” says corporate lawyer Dorien Verhulst.

By far the most ads that came up in 2018 were ads featuring Jort Kelder. The name or photo of internet entrepreneur Alexander Klöpping was used in eleven campaigns. Google counted three campaigns with comedian Arjen Lubach and one advertisement with advertiser Willem Middelkoop.

Google is the largest provider of online advertising space and uses advertising space on 35 million websites and apps. Jort Kelder’s case concerns advertisements on news sites that appear to be news articles and thus mislead consumers. In 2018 and 2019, consumers were inundated with fake bitcoin ads. Kaaks: “It is not always clear that this is fake news. It’s all about tricking people into clicking. Google is responsible for this.”
