Apple leases private cars
If consumers have their device repaired by Apple or a partner, they do not receive a discount on the old part: it is recycled by Apple as standard. The company does not expect most customers to choose to repair themselves. “For the vast majority of customers who have no experience repairing electronic devices, the safest and most reliable way to perform a repair is to visit a professional repair shop that uses genuine Apple parts” Apple said.
This is partly due to the specialized equipment needed to open and securely reassemble iPhones. Apple rents the following equipment: $49 for a repair kit that includes special screwdrivers and a press to properly press the screen. The set consists of two suitcases of more than 35 kilos together. Consumers get a week of luggage on loan, for Americans delivery is free.
Later this year, Apple plans to roll out the repair program in the first European countries as well. It is not yet known when it will be the turn of the Netherlands.
