Dutch book industry launches its own streaming service

Whisper is a new platform that offers unlimited access to exclusive audiobooks, eBooks and podcasts on a subscription basis. According to a spokesperson, Whisper is an alternative to foreign platforms. He calls it “a Dutch platform closer to writers and publishers”. “This is our own Dutch platform, not the Googles and Apples and Amazons of the world. By Dutch publishers, booksellers, magazines and newspapers.”

Three major publishers (Singel, WPG and VBK) work together with booksellers Libris and Blz for Whisper, media company DPG Media, and V-Ventures, the investment arm of Vereniging Veronica. Other Dutch publishers can join the platform.

The Whisper subscription costs 12.99 euros per month. The spokesperson says that e-books can also be read by users on e-readers from multiple manufacturers. Whisper also gets exclusive podcasts, stories, and book samples.

Follow favorite authors

Whisper users should be able to follow their favorite authors and critics for advice on books and podcasts, among other things. Nelleke Noordervliet, Jessica Durlacher, Arnon Grunberg, Arthur Japin, Ronald Giphart and Sylvia Witteman, among others, will become ‘ambassadors’ of the new service.
