Many chat apps now offer such a secure environment. WhatsApp, for example, is technically so secure that messages and photos can only be viewed on the sender and recipient’s device. Experts fear that the Commission wants to undermine this strong security.
This means that companies, along with their services, must install software that scans for child pornography on the device itself. Images that someone wants to post are compared with a database of known child pornographic images. However, the Commission also wants to prevent the distribution of child abuse images that are not yet included in this database.
“The technology is not there yet”
This means that image recognition software must determine whether an image is child abuse. “This technology is not yet advanced enough for that,” says Gerkens. He’s not the only one affected. Rejo Zenger of civil rights organization Bits of Freedom agrees.
