The two largest newspaper publishers in the Netherlands, DPG Media and Mediahuis, have yet to reach an agreement with Google about payment for the use of news articles. Google announced on Wednesday that it had reached an agreement with three hundred organizations in the EU about the payment of information, including Dutch organizations.
It is not known with which Dutch news agencies the deal has been concluded. Google won’t disclose this because it’s confidential.
DPG, which publishes NU.nl, is also a kind of newspaper. by Volkskrantmost NAME and loyaltyclaims it has not made a deal with Google. Mediahuis and NPO also failed to reach an agreement on compensation for their information in Google News.
European publishers have challenged the power of Google and other platforms in recent years and have urged regulators to investigate. Publishers say the platforms generate billions in ad revenue.
Last year, twelve Dutch publishers announced that they wanted to work together to take advantage of the so-called broadcasting rights. It is a new type of intellectual property that the European Union introduced three years ago to allow news organizations to charge when online platforms broadcast their messages.
Discussions on such a united front for technology platforms are ongoing. According to DPG, they are making good progress.
